Adobe Acrobat is a group of programs that allows you to view, create, and alter PDF (Portable Document Format) files. PDF files allow you to see a document exactly how an author designed it.

Acrobat vs. Acrobat Reader

One thing we all need to understand: there are two forms of Adobe Acrobat available. The first and most common, Acrobat Reader, is free to download and use, but has limited capabilities. With it, you can view and print PDF files, and you can fill in PDF interactive forms. You can not, however, save PDF interactive forms containing your information or create PDF files. On the other hand, Acrobat (full version, not a free download - approximately $300 for the standard version) allows you to do all these things.  Click to visit the Adobe Acrobat Reader Download page.

Filling Out an Interactive PDF Form

One of the most common uses of Acrobat on the internet is filling out interactive forms (all "interactive" means here is that you can type directly onto the form on the computer). To do this, all you need is Acrobat Reader.

The Acrobat Toolbar should appear right above the form. (It will look something like the example below, depending on the Acrobat Version and custom tool bar selection.):

To make the form appear in an appropriate size, select the Zoom Tool.  Next move the pointer onto the form and click until the text is large enough to read.    or

Make sure that the Hand Tool is selected. This tool allows you to manipulate (fill-in and print) the form.

Position the pointer on a form field and click. The "I-beam" cursor indicates that you can type in a given field; the "pointer" cursor allows you to select a button, a check box, a radio button, or an item from a select-list.

Make sure to use the Acrobat "printer icon" to print the document. (Do not use the Internet Explorer Printer ICON or File Z Print menu command.) Remember to use legal paper when printing.

Note! Unfortunately, you may not save anything other than the blank form using Acrobat Reader. If you are using the full version of Acrobat, however, you may save a filled-out form.
