The Challenges of Adaptive Reuse in Urban and Suburban Contexts – Zoom
December 9, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
THE ADAPTIVE REUSE OF BUILDINGS IS CRITICAL TO OUR REAL ESTATE ENVIRONMENT.
In the latter part of the 20th century especially, building patterns promoted single-use structures that are not easily adaptable into other uses. Euclidean zoning separates uses while rigid financing criteria further exacerbates the inflexibility of buildings to adapt to changing needs. Given all of the changes in market demands and space utilization in the past year alone, our buildings need to be ready for adaptive reuse. ZoneCo Consultants Sean Suder and Jocelyn Gibson, and Donnie Warner, Economic Development Consultant and Public Finance Attorney, will discuss the importance of adaptive reuse, the benefits, and challenges – particularly from a zoning and financing standpoint – and how to overcome those challenges. They will be joined by Tom Carroll, Village Manager of Silverton, Ohio that has facilitated several adaptive reuse projects within his municipality.
